My job has been always mandating that work is not a place to go to every day, since 2010, I am working from anywhere, literally anywhere, airport, bars, airplanes, cafés, restaurant, pools hotel rooms, cars, and sometime offices.
I had many stories to tell. I always remember falling asleep while working in Heathrow Airport on my way back from New York. That day I had 3 Red bull cans.
Now, this is normal, specially after the COVID-19 Pandemic, working from home and the new acronym WFH is becoming the normal way of ding business, Remote workers, are being all around the glob and companies whether big or small have some sort of remote workers now in place.
You can see companies now going 100% remote working, BTW Pinnacle started 100% remote since its foundation. And companies going hybrid with some of its office workers building their offices ate home and some stating out loud that they will return to their office work and many stating … they do not know.
There are some benefits of Working From Home “WFH” for Enterprise Employers for sure, nobody can deny that the Flexible work is the future of work. With companies all over the world asking their employees to work from home, remote work has become the new normal for global businesses and enterprise employers.
However, there are some drawbacks as well, and we must be clear about it and focus on studying the impact on the people and the business. With software solutions that streamline communication and improve daily workflows, managing a distributed workforce has never been easier.
The Communication will be more efficient, if organizations train their employees on how to use the technology in everything they do in their daily life, solutions like Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams, it is far easier to get everyone on the same page. Keep all communication, files, and approvals in one easily accessible place to eliminate time lost sifting through email chains or needlessly taxing progress reports. Improve collaboration with customer profiles and project updates in real-time. the idea is that the technology set to make us come closer and collaborate more may be hindering us from doing the same without proper mindset shift and technology skills for people to manage more of their tasks without the need to physically set face to face.
The Productivity of the employees will increase, the studies show that telecommuting employees are 25% more productive than their office counterparts. Not only are there fewer social distractions, but there are also more opportunities to take necessary breaks when needed, which psychologists say helps with overall performance, motivation, and creativity among other benefits. However, we cannot deny that working from home caused stress, defocus, aggressiveness, and loss of productivity after setting in front of screens for hours and the fact that the majority of the remote home workers stated that they work more hours and felt fatigue after few days of continuous work.
Remote workers lost their commuting time, where they were able to think, plan the day, relax and see the roads, despite that the fact that commuting time has been saved, lot of benefits from this time has been lost..
Companies should train their people on the right way to manage their time, productivity and wellbeing while setting for days in the same place without getting out and not being socializing with others than their close family members, they should be told how to manage their time, their wellbeing, eating habits and movements and being coached to make sure that the “what to do” being applied and becoming a behavioral changer. Human resources professionals need to work more on how to bond the team together virtually, without the coffee and smoke breaks etc. it is possible to build a healthy remote office culture with the help of digital tools.
If the organization is taking the decision of working from home, hybrid or not, this must come backed up with the right communication, mindset trainings and workshops, coaching and mentoring for employees to keep the productivity. It is not only stating that policy of workplace without setting the scene for a healthy transformation of Mindset, Skills, and structure to do so.
Pools of talents expanded and thus organizations need to think differently when looking for talents acquisition, you do not need to ask for certain area residents anymore, transportation allowance is not needed and time to commute to work daily is not there. Work and live anywhere. If your employees are able to finish their work at the same high-quality level and communicate with their core team, as needed, they can pretty much set up their offices anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection. Have flexible hours. Working nine to five is not a realistic model now for most employees because of differing energy levels, task durations, and personal schedule needs. Remote work allows employees to remain productive within the hours when they feel the most innovative, so they can plan for the right amount of task time and accommodate basic needs. Organizations needs to think how to avoid the culture difference and the sense of belonging, how to avoid the loneliness and feeling of abondance the remote workers feel, how to build the trust between managers, supervisors and workers/ staff who are doing their job. It is a great effort before moving on with the remote talent acquisition.
The dilemma will remain for a while, the decision to go remote or on premises or hybrid is not an easy decision and it will need to set the right change management in place before going ahead with the implementation. Please train your people before letting them face the unknown, they need to be learning new skills, with different generation in each organization it will not be easy for everyone to accommodate technology, we cannot blame Rod Ponton, County Attorney in Presidio County, Texas, for him unable to figure out how to turn off the cat filter on his Zoom call during a hearing on Tuesday in Texas’ 394th Judicial District Court. He simply needed training and coaching.
